We are pleased to share that The Dexter Apartments was honored with the “Compatible New Building in an Historic District” award at the 2024 Celebration of Preservation, presented by the Cleveland Restoration Society (CRS) and the American Institute of Architects Cleveland (AIA.)
The Dexter Apartments, developed by Casto and built by Pride One, are located on Franklin Circle in Cleveland’s historic Ohio City neighborhood. The project’s site fronts an intersection which was previously a dead-end street, now recently restored to its original form of a traffic circle by the City of Cleveland. The design of The Dexter’s primary facade was conceived to reinforce this restored urban context, while transitioning from a larger civic scale on down, in deference to the historic Victorian era homes to the west.
The Dexter provided the necessary mass to define the circle as it had once existed. Dexter Place, the street that the project takes its name from, had long been cut off from the circle. The new building provided a lighted, public pedestrian pass-through allowing Dexter Place to reconnect to the circle. The pedestrian pass-through features a curated, rotating collection of public art.
