Congratulations to WXZ Development on winning the “Distinguished Adaptive Reuse and Dedication Award” & “AIA Craftsmanship Award” from the Cleveland Restoration Society for their project, the College Club of Cleveland.
The historic College Club of Cleveland consists of two buildings — a three-story brick mansion and a two-story brick carriage barn. Constructed in 1904-05, the property was a single-family residence until it was purchased by the College Club of Cleveland, a women’s philanthropic organization, for use as a clubhouse.
Located in the Euclid Heights Historic District of Cleveland Heights, the College Club is one of the few remaining of fourteen historic mansions originally located on the westernmost block of Overlook Road. Federal and state historic tax credits were used to sensitively convert the former single-family residence and carriage barn into fourteen residential units. Tremendous care was taken to preserve the character-defining features on the interior. The main rooms of the mansion were left intact with the new residential units designed to fit those historic rooms and historic finishes.
The project altered very little of either historic building while removing non‐historic additions and rehabilitating, re‐exposing, and preserving most of the historic finishes. In addition to the historic portion of the College Club, the project also includes 13 new modern townhomes.
